ADRIAN, Mich. – Looking to build on a series sweep of Albion College earlier this week to begin MIAA play, the Kalamazoo College baseball team dropped two games to Adrian College Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs took game one, 5-0, and game two, 17-4.
Game One
A two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth from the Bulldogs proved to be the difference in game one of the teams' doubleheader as Adrian took it, 5-0.
Ryan Orr cruised through the Adrian lineup through his first four innings of work, giving up just one hit to the Bulldogs' first 13 batters. Coming out in the fifth, Orr retired the first two batters but the Bulldogs rallied for five runs on six straight two-out hits, ultimately proving to be enough for Adrian to take game one.
The Hornets put runners in scoring position in both the first and third innings but the group was unable to take an early advantage. K left six runners on base throughout the game.
Ian Kobernick led the Hornets' bats with two hits.
Game Two
The Kalamazoo offense took little time to get going in the second game of the day as K loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first but the Hornets were unable to bust the game open as the Bulldogs limited Kalamazoo to scoring just one run in the first.
After Adrian took a 2-1 lead in the third the Hornets regained their edge in the fourth with two runs but with the Bulldogs threatening with runners in scoring position in both the fifth and sixth innings, Adrian did what Kalamazoo wanted to do in the first inning and put multiple runs on the board.
Five runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth allowed the Bulldogs to lead 10-3 after six and the deficit proved too large for Kalamazoo to overcome.
Ryan Orr, Jordan Wiley and Kobernick went a combined 6-for-11 at the top of the Hornets' order with two RBIs. Five other Hornets recorded hits in the day's second game.
The two teams will travel back to the west side of the state for two more games tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m.
