GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Powered to another win by likely contributors, the Kalamazoo College baseball team defeated Calvin College 3-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Friday afternoon in the final Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association regular season series.

With the win and the subsequent win by Adrian College over Hope College, the Hornets are locked into the two seed for the MIAA tournament and will host a first round game next Wednesday, May 10, notably the first time the Hornets will host an MIAA tournament game in program history.

On the mound, Hornet ace Ryan Orr fell behind early giving up a run in the bottom of the second, but the Hornet bats, lifted by senior outfielder Ian Kobernick, sprung to life in the latter innings of play.

Kobernick drove in Orr on a single up the middle in the top of the fourth before putting the Hornets ahead with his second RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly in the sixth. He's currently second in the MIAA in RBIs.

Jordan Wiley knocked in what proved to be the game-winning run on an infield single in the top of the seventh before the Knights threated with the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning. Orr forced a double play and struck out the last batter of the game. He finished his day tossing his fifth complete game of the season giving up two runs—one earned—and struck out nine batters, two shy of his season-high. He also went 2-for-4 from the dish.

Wiley sparked the Hornets from the lead-off spot going 2-for-4 with a stolen base.

With the bats remaining relatively quiet in game one, Kalamazoo's offense came to life in game two combining for 14 hits on the way to a 9-4 win.

Big innings in the fifth and eighth, where they scored three and five runs respectively, backed a quality start from Aaron Schwark. Schwark ended game two tossing six innings of work giving up two runs—one earned—while striking out six.

Five different Hornets ended with multi-hit games led by a 3-for-5 game from Orr, who drove in two runs. Also driving in two runs were Kobernick and Alex Fultz.

The Hornets, now 19-7 in the MIAA, will honor their seniors tomorrow afternoon at Woodworth Field in the final doubleheader of the regular season. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
