Baseball splits at Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College baseball team split a pair of games with Calvin on Friday afternoon on the road, losing the first 5-4 and winning the second 17-8.

Game One

After a scoreless first inning, Calvin broke out for five runs in the second to take an early lead. Kalamazoo got on the board in the third as Alex Fultz drove in Zach Prystash to get the Kalamazoo offense started. 

In the fourth the Hornets narrowed the Calvin lead as they loaded the bases and scored three runs on three hits to make the game 5-4. The Hornets were unable to mount a late comeback as they grounded out twice in the seventh and struck out swinging to end the game.

Game Two

The Kalamazoo offense came alive in the second game, starting with a pair of runs in the first inning. The Hornets tacked on another run in the third before exploding for nine runs on seven hits in the fourth highlighted by Andre Gard's grand slam.

Calvin scored three runs of their own in the fourth, but Kalamazoo put up four more runs in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Kalamazoo recorded 19 total hits in the contest with ten different players recording hits in the game, including seven with two or more. Andre Gard was outstanding going 2-for-4 and driving in five runs while Alex Fultz went 3-for-5 with two RBIs to lead the Hornets.

Joe Giacalone earned the win on the mound for Kalamazoo.

The Hornets will finish the series at home tomorrow with another doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
