Baseball Wins Series Opener at Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College baseball team won the series opener at Calvin 12-10 on Friday.

The Hornets scored six in the top of the first and five in the top of the second to take an 11-0 lead. Calvin chipped away with two in the bottom of the second and three in the third to make it 11-5. Calvin added another run in the fifth and four in the sixth to make it an 11-10 game. Kalamazoo added an insurance run in the eighth while Cade Thune pitched a scoreless final two innings to secure the win.

Kalamazoo had 12 hits in the game compared to nine by Calvin.

Blake Bean was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Lukas Bolton had two hits with a double and two RBIs. Harrison Poeszat also had two hits with a double and three RBIs. Spencer Baldwin and Max Gordon also doubled in the game, with Gordon also driving in two runs.

Alex Bowden pitched a scoreless seventh inning with two strikeouts. Cade Thune did not allow a run over the final two innings while striking out four to earn the save.

Kalamazoo and Calvin are scheduled to finish the series on Saturday with a doubleheader in Kalamazoo scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
