Thomas Sylvester of the Kalamazoo College baseball team was selected as the MIAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week on Monday (Feb. 27). This is the first time in his career that the senior has collected player of the week honors.

The baseball team earned its first win of the season in their season opener this past Sunday (Feb. 26) against Defiance. The Hornets defeated the Yellow Jackets 8-2 in a road contest.

Sylvester started on the bump for Kalamazoo and earned the win after throwing five innings. He allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out eight batters. The strikeout total was one away from matching his career-high. Of the four hits allowed, only one was for extra bases, as Defiance had one double.

In his career, the left-hander has appeared in 30 games with 21 starts and has a 6-4 record. In 95 innings, Sylvester has racked up 113 strikeouts for 10.71 strikeouts per nine innings. He was an All-MIAA First Team member last season and has been selected to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll once.

Kalamazoo will next travel to Louisville, Ky., to play three games on Saturday and Sunday (Mar. 4-5).
