Men's Basketball beats Calvin on buzzer beater

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team defeated Calvin 70-69 with a buzzer-beating tip-in on Wednesday.

Tanner Blyly's field goal attempt in the closing seconds was off the mark, but Jimmy Paprocki was able to beat the clock on the put back to win the game for the Hornets.

Kalamazoo trailed by as many as nine points in the first half before going into halftime down 37-30.

The Hornets trailed by 11 (41-30) early in the second half before Ben Reiter scored the next 15 points for the Hornets over three minutes to give Kalamazoo a 45-43 lead at the 15:56 mark.

Calvin regained the lead briefly, but Kalamazoo led by as many as five points over the next 14 minutes of play. Calvin tied the game at 64-64 at 2:07 and regained the lead at 1:41, but Ben Reiter's sixth 3-pointer of the game put Kalamazoo back on top 67-66 with 1:24 remaining. Jimmy Paprocki made a free throw with 39 seconds left to go up 68-66, but a 3-point play by the Knights put Calvin back on top (69-68) with 11 seconds on the clock.

Kalamazoo pushed through Calvin's press before Blyly put up a short jumper that went off the backboard and straight to Paprocki who quickly put the ball back up and through the net for the win.

Kalamazoo shot 51.9 percent from the field while sinking 11-of-21 3-pointers. Calvin was held to 32.9 percent and 6-of-28 3's. The Knights held a 37-34 advantage in rebounds, including 19-6 on the offensive end.

Ben Reiter scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Hornets. The sophomore was 10-of-13 overall and 6-of-7 from behind the arc while sinking both of his free throws.

Roger Hood finished with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting while Jimmy Paprocki scored 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.

Tanner Blyly scored five points with five assists while pulling down a career-high 14 rebounds.

Kalamazoo returns to action at home against Trine on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 3 p.m.
