Men's Basketball Earns Season Sweep of Alma

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team pulled off another comeback victory against Alma with a 76-67 win on Saturday afternoon. 

The Hornets took off on a 5-0 run to start the game, leading by as much as five points before the Scots were able to eventually catch up and take their first lead at 14:23 to make it 11-10. Alma then held the advantage for the remainder of the first half, leading by as much as ten points. 

Despite the Scots holding on to a slim lead through the first seven minutes of the second half, Kalamazoo came up with a jumper from Merritt Hamann to even the score at 50-50 with 13:32 remaining. Alma fought back and went ahead 58-56 before the Hornets had a 7-0 run to seal the fate of the Scots and hold the advantage for the remainder of the game. Alma suffered ten turnovers in the second half of play. 

Alma held the shooting advantage in the first half with 50 percent accuracy to Kalamazoo's 37.9. In the second half, Kalamazoo shot a season-high 55.2 percent with 35.7 percent accuracy from three-point range. The Hornets shot 46.6 percent overall (27-of-58) and 77.8 percent (14-of-18) from the free-throw line, both season highs. The Scots outrebounded the Hornets 36-33, but Kalamazoo tallied only 11 turnovers compared to Alma's 20. Kalamazoo notched 34 points in the paint and earned 15 points off Alma turnovers. 

All five starters for the Hornets scored in double-digits in today's contest. 

Senior forward Merritt Hamann led the Hornets with 20 points and nine assists, one shy of tying the school record. 

Fellow senior Thomas Cook earned his fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Jordan Currie and Jack Smith each added 14 points, Smith leading the Hornets with four steals. 

Freshman Bobby Samples tied his career-high of ten points, shooting 2-of-2 from three-point range. 

The Hornets return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 24 for a road game against Calvin. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
