KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team fell to Adrian College, 83-71, in the Hornets' MIAA-conference opener Saturday afternoon at Anderson Athletic Center.

The Hornets took a quick 2-0 lead on a Lukas Broadsword jump shot 62 seconds into the game, but that would prove to be the only advantage that Kalamazoo would enjoy on the afternoon. Adrian promptly went on a 24-6 run over the next 7:16 to grab a commanding advantage.

The Hornets regrouped, however, and a Josh Decker three-pointer with 5:31 remaining in the first half cut the Bulldog lead to eight, 32-24. Adrian then went on another run, outscoring the Hornets 16-6 to take a 48-30 lead into the locker room.

The Adrian lead swelled to its largest margin of the afternoon, 53-30, just 71 seconds into the second half. Kalamazoo gathered itself, however, and when Gabriel Sharp's layup dropped with 14:41 left, the Bulldog lead had been whittled down to 14 points, 59-45.

That would be as close as Kalamazoo would get until Broadsword's bucket with 43 seconds left provided the final margin. Decker's 18 points led the way for the Hornets (3-9, 0-1 MIAA), who also got 11 points, seven rebounds and a team-high four assists from DJ Courtney. Broadsword finished with a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) and added three assists.

K's Chris Cayton made 4-of-5 shots from the field for nine points and Sharp tallied eight points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field.

Adrian claimed advantages in rebounds (35-30) and steals (9-2), but the Bulldogs' shooting is what allowed them to get on the bus with a precious MIAA win in tow. Adrian shot a sizzling 35-61 (57%) from the field and 9-21 (43%) from beyond the three-point arc, while the Hornets were held to 46% (26-56) overall and 8-26 (31%) from distance.

Kalamazoo will next face a quick turnaround to begin what will be a busy week on the road. First up on the schedule is a 7 p.m. game on Monday at Alma that was originally scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 5, but postponed due to weather. The team will then continue its travels with trips to Albion on Wednesday and Trine on Saturday.
