KALAMAZOO, Mich. – For the second consecutive game, the Kalamazoo College men's lacrosse team welcomed not only its opponent but snow to MacKenzie Field, and Wednesday evening the result unfolded in the Hornets favor. Kalamazoo defeated Concordia-Chicago, 12-5.
With Hans Wieland scoring the game's lone goal in the first quarter, Kalamazoo started the second quarter scoring five straight goals with all five goals coming from different goal scorers. A late goal from Andrew Frye with one second remaining in the first half gave the Hornets a 7-1 advantage at the halftime break.
Concordia mounted a small comeback effort in the fourth quarter of play cutting its deficit to as little as five, but the Hornets rallied for three of the game's last four goals and sent the Cougars home defeated.
Brett Fitzgerald had a strong overall game for Kalamazoo tallying a team-high three goals and five assists. Andrew Frye also scored three goals.
Hans Wieland ended the evening with two goals while four other Hornets came away from MacKenzie Field with a goal apiece.
Nate Silverman stopped eight shots in goal for K, while the Hornets managed to find their way to nearly every loose ball recording 51 ground balls compared to Concordia's 18.
Zach Morales picked up a team-high 12 ground balls while helping Joe Edwards win 15-of-20 face-offs.
With the result, Kalamazoo improves to 1-1 on the season. The Hornets hit the road for their next contest on March 4 at Benedictine.
