Men's Soccer falls to No. 1 Calvin

Griffin Hamel playing soccer.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Calvin, currently the top ranked team in NCAA DIII, on Saturday at MacKenzie Field on Homecoming.

The game was very evenly played throughout the first half with Calvin holding a slim 5-4 advantage in shots, but the Knights scored the the game's only goal in the 41st minute as Trent Vegter headed home a free kick from Matt Hinds to give Calvin the lead.

Kalamazoo continued to push forward throughout the second half in search of the equalizer and crosses into the Calvin penalty area produced multiple goal scoring opportunities, but the Hornets were unable to apply the finishing touch.

Griffin Hamel was outstanding in goal for Kalamazoo, making six saves to hold the Calvin offense at bay. His diving save to deny Trent Vegter from close range in the second half kept the Hornets in the contest.

Kalamazoo will return to the field on Wednesday to celebrate Senior Night as they take on Albion at 7 p.m.
