Six Men's Soccer Players Named All-MIAA

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Six players on the Kalamazoo College men's soccer team were recognized as All-MIAA performers on Friday afternoon. 

The Hornets had two members, Ben Meschke and Mikey Schwartz named to the First Team. Gold Afolabi, Aidan Hurley, Alex Wallace and Luke Kastran all received Second Team honors. 

Meschke, a forward from Williamston, Mich. (Okemos HS), led the Hornets in goals scored for the third straight season. He ended the season with six goals and 16 points, a tie for most in the MIAA. He scored at least one goal in five of Kalamazoo's seven contests, ending with a two-goal performance against Alma in the MIAA Tournament. Four of his goals were game-winners. Meschke also totaled a team-high four assists, tied with two players from Trine for the most in the league by a single player. This is his second time being named All-MIAA.

Schwartz, a defender from Plymouth, Mich. (Salem HS), played a strong role in the Kalamazoo defense this season in his senior year. He started and saw action in all seven contests for Kalamazoo. Schwartz was an important presence in the backfield, contributing to a defense that kept four of Kalamazoo's wins shutouts. Schwartz also came up with one shot, in the game against Alma on March 30. This is the third straight year that Schwartz has received All-MIAA honors, and the second time he has been on the First Team. 

Afolabi is a senior from Arlington, Texas (Mansfield Summit HS). The midfielder makes his first appearance on the All-MIAA squad. Afolabi totaled a career-high two goals and six points this season. He also contributed two assists. Afolabi put up the second goal of the game in the team's 2-0 shutout against Alma on March 30, and scored on April 16 in the 3-2 win over Hope to wrap up the regular season.  

Wallace, a junior from Davie, Fla. (American Heritage Plantation HS), stepped up as a midfielder and was a strong scoring presence for the Hornets. Wallace scored four goals and contributed three assists. He scored the lone goal of the game in Kalamazoo's 1-0 win over Adrian on April 2. He recorded two assists on two of the team's four goals in the MIAA Tournament first round game against Alma. Wallace tallied six points and ended with eight shots on goal attempted. This is his second time being named All-MIAA

Hurley, a senior midfielder from Plymouth, Mich. (Plymouth-Canton) was named to the All-MIAA Second Team. This marks Hurley's third year as a starter for the Hornets. Hurley contributed one assist this season, on the game-winning goal by Meschke in the 2-0 victory over Alma in March. Hurley was another important piece of the Hornet defense that allowed just eight goals from opponents this season. 

Junior Goalie Luke Kastran from Rochester Hills, Mich. (Rochester HS) was an impressive force in goal in his third straight season as Kalamazoo's starting goalkeeper. He played the full 90 minutes of all seven games, totaling 18 saves. He helped the Hornets to four shutout wins on the season with a save percentage of .692. Kastran was second in the league in goals against average, allowing just 1.11 goals from opponents per game. This is his first time receiving All-MIAA Honors. 

The Hornets wrapped up their season with a 5-1-1 overall record and went 5-1 in league play. They were defeated by Alma in the first round of the MIAA Tournament in a 4-4 tie, with Alma advancing on penalty kicks.
