Metzler's NCAA run ends in semifinals

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Branden Metzler, the No. 5 seed in the 2017 NCAA III Singles Championships, was defeated in Friday's semifinals 6-2, 6-2 by No. 1 seed Lubomir Cuba (Middlebury).

Metzler advanced to Friday's semifinal round with a three-set win (6-4, 2-6, 7-5) over Grant Urken (Bowdoin) during Friday morning's quarterfinal round.

Thursday's Results

Metzler won his opening match 6-3, 6-1 over Glenn Hull (Claremont-Mudd-Scripps) on Thursday. He then defeated Tyler Barr (MIT) 7-6(5), 6-4 in the round of 16. Metzler trailed 5-2 in the opening set against Barr before rallying to win the tiebreaker and eventually the match.

By advancing to the quarterfinal round Metzler earned All-American honors for the second consecutive year.
