KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Tytus Metzler of the Kalamazoo College men's tennis team was named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Metzler, a senior from Rockford, Ill. (Auburn HS) was an integral part of Kalamazoo's two wins last week to cinch the MIAA Tournament title. In the 5-0 victory over Trine in the semifinals on May 6, he won 8-3 with Peter Fitzgerald at No. 2 doubles. He was the first to earn a win in singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over his opponent at No. 3 singles. Metzler and Fitzgerald won again on Saturday in the championship match with an 8-2 beating of their Hope opponent at 2 doubles.
Metzler was a perfect 4-0 overall and 3-0 in conference singles play this season to move to 43-13, 16-0 in his career with the Hornets. Playing primarily at No. 2 doubles he holds a 40-20, 15-1 MIAA record.
Kalamazoo is scheduled to face Luther College in the second round of the NCAA Division III men's tennis tournament, with dates and times to be announced.
