Softball splits with No. 4 Trine

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College softball team handed Trine just its second loss of the season as the Hornets defeated the fourth-ranked Thunder 9-5 in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday.

Kalamazoo led off the third inning with six straight hits leading to five runs in the inning.

Trine hit a home run in the bottom of the third to make it a 5-2 game.

Kalamazoo used a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth to score two more runs making it 7-2 Hornets.

Kalamazoo added two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 9-3 lead with three outs remaining.

Trine hit a 2-run home run in the bottom half to make it 9-5, and had a runner on base before lining into a double play to end the game.

Nori Seita earned the win on the mound while contributing two hits at the plate. Erin DuRoss and Anna Majewski each had three hits while Isabella Kirck had two hits.

Kalamazoo lost the opening game 3-0.

The Thunder hit solo home runs in the second, third and sixth innings while accumulating five hits overall.

Briana Huisken ripped a double down the third base line for Kalamazoo's first hit in the fifth. Erin DuRoss was inches short of a home run with a double off the top of the fence in left-centerfield in the seventh. 

DuRoss struck out five Thunder batters while not allowing a walk in the loss.

Kalamazoo returns to action on Sunday, April 9 with a 2 p.m. start at Alma.
