Softball earns split at Franklin

FRANKLIN, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College softball team split a doubleheader at Franklin College on Saturday. After losing the opener 8-0, Kalamazoo won the second game 10-9 to give Franklin (9-1) its first loss of the season.

Franklin scored four runs in each of the first two innings in the opener. Anna Majewski doubled while Andrea MacMichael had a single.

The two teams combined for 25 hits in the second game.

Kalamazoo scored twice in the top of the second to take the early lead, but Franklin responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. The host Grizzlies went up 8-2 after three innings before Kalamazoo scored three in the fourth and three in the fifth to even the score.

Franklin pulled ahead again (9-8) with a run in the bottom of the fifth only to see Kalamazoo even the score again in the top of the sixth.

Kalamazoo went on top (10-9) with a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth and closed out the bottom of the seventh leaving two Grizzlies on the bases.

Nina Szalkiewicz was 3-for-3 in the game with three runs scored.

Andrea MacMichael, Anna Majewski, Brianna Huisken and Sammi Luzadre each had two hits. Luzadre's hits were a double and a triple while Alyssa Heitkamp also had a double.

Luzadre also earned the win on the mound in relief as she held Franklin scoreless over the final two innings.

Kalamazoo is scheduled to face Defiance at home on Friday, March 16 at 3:30 p.m.
