Softball splits doubleheader with Defiance

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College softball team split a doubleheader with Defiance College Saturday in a pair of one run games. Kalamazoo won the opener 7-6 before dropping the finale 6-5.

Game One

Defiance scored four runs in the top of the first in the opener, but Kalamazoo responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. The Hornets added a pair of runs in the second inning to go up 7-4 and held on for the 7-6 win.

Sammi Luzadre improved to 3-1 with the complete game win while striking out six and walking one. 

Luzadre and Briana Huisken each had two-run singles in the five-run first inning.

Hayleigh Alamo and Anna Majewski each had a double in the game.

Game Two

Defiance and Kalamazoo each scored a run in the first inning before the Hornets pulled ahead 2-1 after the third inning.

Defiance regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth only to see Kalamazoo score three runs in the bottom half to retake the lead 5-3. Defiance followed up with a pair of runs in the fifth and scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh to take the lead before holding the Hornets scoreless in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

Hayleigh Alamo, Anna Majewski and Briana Huisken each had two hits in the game. Alamo and Majewski each drove in two runs while Izzy Kirck scored twice.

Following final exams, the Hornets will travel south to Florida where they are scheduled to play 10 games beginning March 22.
