Softball splits with Worcester State and Grinnell

Keelin McManus playing softball.

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Kalamazoo College softball team bounced back from a pair of losses on the first day of its spring break trip by splitting a couple of games Friday.

Kalamazoo vs. Worcester State

K opened the day with a 5-1 victory over Worcester State.

The Hornets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Hayleigh Alamo singled into right field to drive in Anna Majewski. After scoring again in the second, the Hornets ballooned their lead to 4-0 in the third inning as Nina Szalkiewicz drove in a run and scored herself.

K tacked on a fifth run for good measure in the sixth as Majewski brought Alyssa Heitkamp home to make the score 5-0. Worcester broke up the shutout in the bottom of the seventh on a home run, but the game was already out of reach.

Keelin McManus had a strong outing on the mound for K, giving up just one run on four hits while striking out four in seven innings of work. McManus also hit a double to drive in a run at the plate for the Hornets.

Kalamazoo vs. Grinnell

In their second game of the day, the Hornets fell 6-3 to Grinnell.

Each team put a run on the board in the first inning with Kalamazoo's coming courtesy of a Nina Szalkiewicz single which scored Anna Majewski. After Grinnell took a 4-1 lead in the top of the third, the Hornets loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning and scored twice to make the game 4-3. Grinnell homered in both the sixth and seventh innings to close out the game.

Szalkiewicz went 2-3 with an RBI to lead K and Sammi Luzadre went the distance on the mound, but took the loss.

Kalamazoo will be back at it tomorrow, Saturday, March 24th at 11:30 a.m. as they take on Tufts.
