Softball drops pair of games at Elmhurst

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Kalamazoo College softball team took a break from conference games on Saturday, dropping a pair of games 5-0 and 7-6 to Elmhurst.

Game One

Both teams were scoreless through five innings in the openning game with Kalamazoo and Elmhurst ustering just three and four hits, respectively. The Elmhurst bats, however, woke up in the bottom of the sixth to the tune of five runs on six hits.

The Hornets had one last chance in the top of the seventh, but the batters were retired in order to end the game.

Nina Szalkiewicz led K offensively, going 2-for-3 at the plate.

Sammi Luzadre took the loss on the mound.

Game Two

The Hornets found their offense in the second game, starting off strong with two runs in the top of the first. Elmhurst scored two of its own in the bottom of the inning and added another in the second to take a 3-2 lead. 

In the top of the third, Kalamazoo tied up the score 3-3 when Izzy Kirck scored after an errant throw. Elmhurst again answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead.

Kalamazoo narrowed the gap in the fourth as Izzy Kirck and Anna Majewski hit back-to-back RBI singles to bring the Hornets to within one run.

Keelin McManus doubled to drive home Sammi Luzadre and tie the game 6-6 in the top of the fifth, but again Elmhurst answered to lead 7-6. 

The Hornets were unable to complete their comeback in the final two innings and Elmhurst held on for the win.

Anna Majewski went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Keelin McManus went 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate.

Kalamazoo will resume conference play tomorrow as they host Olivet for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
