Softball Falls in MIAA Tournament Opener

ANGOLA, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College softball team lost 12-9 to top-seeded Trine University in the opening game of Pool A in the MIAA Tournament on Thursday.

Kalamazoo scored two runs in the top of the first only to see Trine take a 3-2 lead in the bottom half. The Hornets scored two more runs in the second and five in the third to take a 9-3 lead. The host Thunder battled back with two in the third and four in the fourth to tie it before going ahead 12-9 with two in the fifth and one in the sixth. Kalamazoo had the leadoff runner on in the seventh before the next three batters were retired to end the game.

Trine had 15 hits in the game compared to 13 by the Hornets.

Sammi Luzadre was 3-for-4 with a double, home run, and two RBIs. 

Nina Szalkiewicz, Sam Moss, Brynna Garden, and Lizzy Rottenberk each had two hits. Szalkiewicz and Moss each had a double. Moss also drove in two runs.

Due to rain delays in the afternoon, Kalamazoo's next game has been pushed to Friday. The Hornets will face the loser of the Alma/Saint Mary's contest.
