KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Led by another strong offensive showing from Emily Kozal, the Kalamazoo College women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season Thursday evening inside Anderson Athletic Center. The Hornets defeated the visiting Marygrove College Mustangs, 67-59.

After a back-and-forth first quarter with Marygrove holding a slight 14-13 advantage, Kalamazoo outscored the Mustangs 19-11 in the second quarter, with nine of Kozal's game-high 22 points coming in the second ten minutes of the first half.

Despite trailing by seven at the break, the Mustangs started the third quarter on an 8-0 run to regain the lead, but the Hornets countered with a 9-0 run and never trailed the rest of the way.

Danielle Simon made five key free throws down the stretch in the fourth quarter to ice the game.

Kozal, the reigning MIAA scoring champion, added eight rebounds to the stat sheet to accompany her 22 points. Simon ended the contest with a double-double, recording 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Also scoring in double figures for K was Suzanne Miller who provided a spark off the bench. She scored 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Sierra Fraser gave K good energy as well, corralling nine boards and scoring eight points.

Kalamazoo dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Mustangs 64-38.

The Hornets will look to carry their momentum into the weekend as Alma visits Anderson Athletic Center for Saturday's 3 p.m. tip.
