NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College women's soccer team lost its season opener 3-1 to Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) on Friday at Saint Mary's College.

Madison Moote put Kalamazoo on the board first with a goal in the 37th minute (Paige Sambor, Madison Vallan assists).

Kalamazoo took the 1-0 lead through halftime and six minutes into the second half before the Engineers scored their first goal of the game. MSOE, an NCAA III Tournament team last season, took the lead with another goal in the 67th minute.

The Hornets thought they tied the score in the 80th minute, but an offside call nullified the goal. MSOE added its third goal five minutes later and held on for the win.

Kalamazoo outshot MSOE 16-5 overall, including 8-4 on goal.

"We started the game very well and created numerous scoring opportunities in the first half," said Head Coach Bryan Goyings. "It was disappointing we were unable to convert more of those chances into goals. MSOE took full advantage of several set pieces and earned the win.

"I was pleased with our focus and team effort. I look forward to applying what we learned tonight when we step on the field tomorrow.

The Hornets return to action Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest against Manchester University at Saint Mary's. Manchester lost its opener 4-1 to the host Belles earlier Friday evening.
