NOTRE DAME, Ind. – After a tough loss to begin the season yesterday evening, the Kalamazoo College women's soccer team bounced back Saturday afternoon, and the team did so in dominating fashion.
The Hornets defeated Manchester University, 6-1.
"After a disappointing result last night I was proud of our performance on a quick turnaround," head coach Bryan Goyings said.
Kalamazoo was energized in the early minutes of the game by first-year forward Julie Zabik. The Kalamazoo native scored her first collegiate goal in the 22nd minute off a slotted ball from Elizabeth Clevenger.
Zabik struck again less than eight minutes later on a shot from 30 yards out.
Emma Tardiff added another goal for the Hornets in the 35th minute as Kalamazoo led 3-0 at the half.
With Manchester looking to get itself back into the game cutting the lead to 3-1 less than five minute into the second half, three unanswered goals down the stretch, including two more from Tardiff to complete her hat trick, solidified the first win of the season for Kalamazoo.
Clevenger added the third goal of the half.
"Emma Tardiff was outstanding in limited minutes," Goyings said. "Her efficiency around goal was exceptional."
Allie Brodsky led the team with two assists, while Grace Smith was challenged with just two shots in 90 minutes of play.
Following the conclusion of the tournament hosted by St. Mary's, Clevenger and Tardiff joined Madison Moote on the All-Tournament team.
Kalamazoo will take the next two days off before opening up MIAA play against Hope College at MacKenzie Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
