Women's Soccer drops Adrian in overtime

Kalamazoo College soccer team in a huddle.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's soccer team continued its trend of late goals this season as Libby Munoz scored in overtime to give the Hornets a 3-2 win over Adrian at MacKenzie Field on Saturday.

On a brutally hot day, the teams traded goals back and forth in a high scoring first half of play. Adrian opened the scoring in the 26th minute as Caroline Fleming scored from close range off of an assist from Mya Oleksiak. K answered just five minutes later when Georgie Andrews scored her first goal of the season as she finished off a rebound at the back post to tie the game 1-1. The Hornets proceeded to take the lead in the 33rd minute as Libby Munoz settled a bouncing ball in the Adrian box and slotted the ball past the keeper to put K ahead 2-1. The goal scoring continued two minutes later as Adrian drew a foul inside the Kalamazoo box and Mackenzie Wilcox stepped up to put away the penalty kick for the Bulldogs and tie the game at 2-2.

After the fireworks of the first half, neither could find the the back of the net in the second half, despite Adrian taking 10 shots to Kalamazoo's one. It did not take long, however, for K to breakthrough once overtime began. Just over two minutes into the extra period, Libby Munoz picked up the ball outside of the Adrian penalty box near the sideline, dribbled toward the middle of the field, and finished over the outstretched arm of a diving Ayverie Giller in the Adrian goal to end the game. The goal was Munoz's second of the game and team-leading eighth on the season.

"I thought the group showed tremendous competitive spirit today and it was without a doubt a team victory," said Coach Bryan Goyings. "Georgie with her back post finishing and Ella with her ball winning were huge contributors off of the bench."

Hannah Wolfe made four saves for the Hornets in the victory.

Kalamazoo, which improves to 5-2-0 in the MIAA, will continue their homestand as they face Olivet at MacKenzie Field on Tuesday at 7p.m.
