3 Hornets named All-MIAA for women’s tennis

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – After finishing the 2017 conference season with a 6-2 team record, three members of the Kalamazoo College women's tennis team earned individual postseason recognition from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association and its member coaches.

Junior Maria Franco and senior Sabrina Dass were named All-MIAA First Team selections. Freshman Laura Hanselman was named an All-MIAA Second Team selection.

Franco, a native of Quito, Ecuador, took over the challenge of one singles in 2017 and didn't disappoint. She compiled a 13-5 overall record going 6-1 in conference and ended the season going 9-1 in her last 10 matches. She put together an 11-7 record on the doubles court while competing with four different partners throughout the season. This is the first time in her career she's been named to the MIAA First Team. Franco was a Second Team selection each of the last two seasons.

Dass, a product of Grand Blanc and a co-captain with Franco in 2017, solidified the two singles spot in the lineup for Kalamazoo during its non-conference schedule and early in the MIAA season. Dass and Franco combined to go 7-4 in doubles play going 2-1 in conference. Dass also went 2-1 in singles during conference play. She ends the 2017 regular season with a career singles record of 56-29. This is the second consecutive selection to the All-MIAA First Team for Dass. She was also named to the Second Team in 2015.

Hanselman, a native of Ann Arbor who prepped as a Huron High River Rat, put together an impressive freshman campaign finishing with a 6-1 singles conference record and an 11-9 overall record. After beginning the season at three singles, Hanselman bumped up to two singles and went undefeated in her four matches at the respective spot in the lineup.

Kalamazoo begins the MIAA tournament tomorrow, May 4 when the Hornets travel to Calvin College looking for revenge after falling 5-4 in the regular season finale to the Knights.
