Volleyball Comes Up Short in Five-Set Loss to Alma

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College volleyball team was narrowly defeated in a thrilling five-set match inside Anderson Athletic Center Tuesday night.

Alma took the first set 27-25 but trailed after Kalamazoo won the next two sets 25-14 and 25-18. The Hornets led 23-22 in the fourth before Alma scored three straight points to send the match to the fifth set.

Despite an early lead by the Scots in the fifth, Kalamazoo led 10-6 and then 14-10, serving for the match. Alma scored four straight to make it 14-14. The Hornets pulled ahead 15-14 and again had a chance to win the match, but Alma scored the final three points to pull out the win.

Brittany Miller led Kalamazoo with 18 kills.

Halley Johnson had nine kills with 21 digs. Taylor Stephens also had nine kills.

Sara Reathaford led the team with 24 assists and 15 digs. Rorie Dougherty added 16 assists with 13 digs.

Lizzy Rachiele had a team-high 34 digs. Rachel Meston finished with 11. 

Savannah Chapie was in on six blocks. Josee Cooke was credited with three.

Kalamazoo is back home Wednesday night when the Hornets face Anderson University in a non-conference match at 7 p.m.
