Scott Mais joined the Hornet coaching staff in 2012.
Mais is one of the most highly regarded volleyball players in the history of West Michigan with a playing and coaching career that dates back to the 1970s. A 1981 graduate of Portage Northern, he played collegiately for two years as a setter, middle hitter and right side at IPFW, but his most impressive accolades have come on the beach.
He began playing beach volleyball in 1979 and has played on tour in the AVP, EVA Florida, MPVA, MVP and Jose Cuervo, while also finishing 2nd at the 1991 Mizuno Grass Doubles Nationals. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, Mais won the Midwest volleyball championships multiple times with multiple partners and was voted MPVA Offensive Player of the Year in 1991 and co-MVP of the MVP in 1992.
During that time, he also competed against volleyball legend Karch Kiraly at the Outpost in Mishawaka, Ind., and holds a 1-1 record against his idol.
He continues to compete in USVA adult national championships and won a national championship as the MVP in the reverse coed division in 2001 and most recently placed second in the 2009 men’s 45-and-over division.
While an accomplished player, Mais is no stranger to patrolling the sidelines. He was the assistant women’s coach at St. Ambrose (Iowa) from 1985-87, before taking over as head coach in 1988. He led St. Ambrose to the final eight at NAIA nationals and was named NAIA Regional Coach of the Year. Mais was also the head coach at Schoolcraft (Mich.) High School from 2001-04, and has coached boys and girls junior teams for more than 20 years.
In between his stints on and off the court, Dr. Mais owns his own business, Mais Chiropractic Clinic, in Schoolcraft. He graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1989.
Mais and his wife, Patty, a massage therapist, have been married since 1992 and have two boys, Jason and Jacob.
