Merry Lu Jordan '82 - Archery
Inducted October 21, 1989
Arguably the best archer in the 30 year history of archery as an MIAA sport. Jordan had never touched bow until her sophomore year, but nevertheless was the high scorer at the league tournament in 1980 and 1981.

Robert Black '26 - Football, Basketball, Baseball
Inducted October 21, 1989
Black won a total of 12 varsity letters, possibly the most ever awarded to a Kalamazoo College athlete. The captain of the 1925 football team was a triple threat on the gridiron, often called upon to pass, punt, or carry the ball on any given play.

Mike Casteel '22 - Football, Baseball, Track
Inducted October 22, 1988
Won twelve letters in three sports during his career. Led the football team to MIAA championships in 1916, 1919, and 1921, and was ALL-MIAA at quarterback three times. The shortstop on three MIAA champion baseball teams, he also helped Kalamazoo to four MIAA track titles. Went on to an outstanding football coaching career.

Varsity letter winner in three sports: Football (3), Basketball (2) and Baseball (2); Team leader in innings pitched and strikeouts of opposing batters (1964); Played for the Ionia Chevy’s of the Midwest Summer League in Grand Rapids and Gilmore Cadillac in the Kalamazoo City League; summer of 1965, led the league in home runs; Three-year member of the football team – offensive tackle, defensive end, and kicker; Invited to pre-draft workouts by National Football League (Spring 1967); Drafted by the Houston Oilers (now the Tennessee Titans) in the 11th round of the NFL draft; Held the honor of being the only player in the history of Kalamazoo College to be drafted by an NFL team; Remained the last MIAA football player to be drafted by an NFL team for the next 45 years; Trained with the Oilers; was cut from the Oilers due to draft order into the U.S. Army.

Four-year basketball player, leading scorer in 1922 and 1923. Played on MIAA basketball championship teams of 1921, 1922, and 1923. Selected to MIAA Hall of Fame in 1923. Played baseball for three years, including MIAA championship team of 1923. Holland High School coach from 1923-31. Hope College football and basketball coach, winning or tying for 14 combined MIAA titles, Athletic Director.

Bertram K. "Scotty" MacGregor '19 - Football, Basketball, Baseball
Inducted October 17,1987
Starting halfback for the undefeated football team of 1916. Scored 16 touchdowns and kicked 33 extra points for 129 points, a College record. Led Kalamazoo to two football championships, four basketball championships, and two baseball championships.

Ryan Orr '18 - Baseball
Inducted October 6, 2023
Playing at Kalamazoo from 2014-18, Orr was one of Kalamazoo's first D3Baseball.com All-Americans in program history, a three-time D3Baseball.com and ABCA/Rawlings All-Region selection, and a four-time MIAA All-Conference member. He was the 2017 MIAA Co-Most Valuable Pitcher and holds MIAA career records in wins, innings pitched, and ERA. Orr was Kalamazoo's Pitcher of the Year four times and Most Valuable Player twice. He holds career records for ERA, wins, innings pitched, strikeouts, complete games, shutouts, and saves while having single-season records for wins, innings pitched, and shutouts. Orr threw two career no-hitters, played in the prestigious Cape Cod League (the first MIAA player ever to do so), and played professionally for the River City Rascals of the Frontier League for two seasons.

John C. Persons '64 - Baseball, Football

Named to the ALL-MIAA baseball team four times, the only player in league history to be so honored. MVP of the baseball team three times. Led the league in hitting in 1961. In football, he twice led the league in receptions. Also lettered in golf.

Dave Rowley '74 - Baseball, Football

Set MIAA single-season records in baseball for innings pitched (80) and most decisions (8). Also lettered in football. Later served as Kalamazoo's head baseball coach.

James E. Stefoff '53 - Baseball, Basketball, Football, and Track
Inducted October 30, 1992
All-MIAA in football in 1950 and 1951, Led the nation (small colleges) in pass receptions with 45 catches for 680 yards and five touchdowns in 1951. Received Associated Press Little ALL-America mention.

Willian S. Taylor '18 - Baseball, Basketball, Football, and Track
Inducted October 27, 1990
An extremely versatile athlete, Taylor was a member of six championship teams in three sports, including four in basketball (1914-1917). He also captained championship squads in baseball and football in 1916.

Set College records for most points (542) and field goals (233) in a season, single game scoring (42), most career field goals (660) and career points (1,619). NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient.

MIAA scoring champion and Most Valuable Player in 1953. Completed career holding all school scoring records, including 43 points in a single game. Set MIAA record for season scoring average of 28.3 points per game. Also three-time letter winner in tennis.

Number of records including rebounds in a season ( 228 ) and rebounds in a game (31). Finished his career as the College's leading rebounder with 668. Led the 1962 MIAA title team in scoring and rebounding, Team MVP twice, twice on all-MIAA selection.

John A. Schelske '82 - Basketball

Schelske an NCAA Division III ALL-American in 1982, remains the most prolific scorer in Hornet basketball history. Schelske dominates the College record books, holding the marks for the most points in a game, season, and career. He twice reached Academic ALL-American honors and earned an NCAA postgraduate scholarship.

Donald Spalsbury '39 - Basketball, Football, Golf
Inducted October 21, 1989
A three-time ALL-MIAA basketball selection. Spalsbury was a hero in a legendary three-way playoff for the league title in 1939. His steal and layup with five seconds remaining lifted the Hornets to victory over Hope en route to the MIAA crown.

Charlie Stanski '50 - Football, Basketball

First post-World War II athlete named to ALL-League teams in both football and basketball. Helped Kalamazoo to MIAA football titles in 1946 and 1948, and was named the ALL-MIAA quarterback in 1948. In basketball, he was ALL-League in 1948, and led Kalamazoo to the championship in 1950.

In football, the starting left tackle for three years. ALL-MIAA and team MVP a a senior. Starting center in basketball his sophomore and senior year. In his senior year, the third-leading scorer in the league, leading Kalamazoo to the MIAA title.

Inducted October 21, 1989
Wood, who led the hornets to five MIAA titles, won the league's first-ever Most valuable Player award for 1939-40. In football, he played every minute of every game for three years.

MIAA Most Valuable Freshman Football Player (1971); All-Conference MIAA Running Back (1972, 1974); Team MVP (1972); Leading Rusher for the Hornets (1973); State of Michigan College Senior-Athlete of the Year Award (1974); Career totals include a single best punt of sixty-four yards, a personal best record of 243 yards in a single game, and carrying the ball forty-one times in one game; Holds 2nd place school record for career rushing yards (2, 053) and 1st place school record for rushing yards based on a career of thirty-two games.

Considered by some the most prolific passer in Kalamazoo College history, MacDonald earned numerous gridiron honors, including two team MVP awards, two All-MIAA first team honors, and the Burger King National Scholar Athlete Award. McDonald holds most of the Kalamazoo College passing records.

Quarterback for the Hornets from 1969 to 1972. Ranked fourth in the NCAA College Division in total offense and 11th in pass completion percentage in 1970. Set MIAA and school records for passing yardage in a single game, season and career, and school records for total offensive yards in a game, season and career.

ALL-MIAA co-captain and Clark McKenzie outstanding lineman in 1950. Coached high school football teams to eight conference and one state championship. Coached high school tennis teams to 24 conference championships, 22 regional championships, and 6 state championships. Inducted into the MHSTCA and MHSFCA Hall of Fame in 1983 and the MHSTCA Hall of Fame in 1986.

Orwin is currently an assistant coach for the men's and women's swimming & diving teams, attending Kalamazoo from 2013-17. She was a four-time All-American and All-MIAA selection. Orwin was an MIAA Champion in seven individual events and four relay events. She set the MIAA record in the 200 Fly and was a part of the 200 Medley Relay team that set the record twice. Her best finish at the NCAA DIII Championships was eighth in the 400 Individual Medley while also finishing ninth in the 100 Fly, 16th in the 200 Fly, and 16th in the 200 Medley Relay. In addition, Orwin was a three-time CSCAA Scholar All-American.

Metzler attended Kalamazoo from 2013-17, where he was a two-time singles All-American, four-time All-MIAA First Team member, and the only Kalamazoo tennis player to be the MIAA MVP all four years. He was the NCAA DIII Singles Championships National Runner-up in 2016, finished the season nationally ranked in the top four twice, and was the ITA Central Region Senior Player of the Year in 2017. Metzler had an 89-17 (22-0 MIAA) singles record in his career and a 66-30 (22-0) doubles record. He ranks third in school history in career singles wins and was a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete.

Noud was a four-time All-MIAA First Team selection (1994, 1995, 1996, 1997) and was an MIAA MVP (1997). He was awarded the Regional and National Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship (1997). He was a CoSIDA Academic All-American (1996).

He was an All-American in both singles and doubles twice (1981 and 1982) and held a world ranking in the ATP. He had NCAA rankings at #16 in singles and #5 in doubles in 1981 and #12 in singles and #7 in doubles in 1982. Riley was undefeated in MIAA play throughout his career, a two-time All-MIAA First Team member (1981, 1982), a team captain (1981, 1982), and earned the MIAA MVP (!982). He and his doubles partner also captured a win over the #1 ranked NCAA DI duo from Georgia in 1982.

One of the outstanding players in Kalamazoo College history. Sunderland won the MIAA singles titles four times and helped the Hornets win league tennis titles four times. Along with doubles partner Vic Braden, won the league doubles title in 1949.

Kelsey Hassevoort '12 - Women's Tennis

Attending Kalamazoo from 2008-12, Hassevoort was a two-time All-MIAA First Team member and an MIAA MVP. She had a 35-45 (22-9 MIAA) singles record in her career and a 38-33 (19-8) doubles record. Hassevoort was the first student-athlete to win the MIAA Karen Caine Scholar-Athlete Award since the award started in 2007. In addition, she was a CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team member and a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District Team member while appearing on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and ITA Scholar-Athlete list all four years. In addition, Hassevoort won the Mary Long Burch Award, which is Kalamazoo's Senior Women's Academic-Athlete Award.

Woods was a four-time singles All-American, All-MIAA First Team member (one of four at K to achieve this honor), and MIAA MVP (one of two at K to achieve this honor). She was ranked in the NCAA 20th or higher all four years and competed at the NCAA DIII Singles Championships three times (2013, 2014, 2015) and the doubles championships once (2015). In addition, Woods was the ITA DIII National Rookie of the Year in 2013 and the ITA Regional Senior Player of the Year in 2016. Woods had an 85-15 (30-0 MIAA) singles record in her career and a 75-25 (28-3) doubles record. She holds the school record for most singles wins in a season (26) while also being second in career singles wins, career singles winning percentage, and career doubles wins. Woods was on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2016, plus she won the Regional and National ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award in 2016.

Physical Education Professor and men's tennis coach for 35 years. He coached his teams to 7 NCAA Division III Championships and 35 MIAA Championships. He coached 38 All-Americans, 19 MIAA MVPs, and 13 MIAA Stowe Sportsmanship Award winners. His tennis team posted a 209-1 MIAA career dual-meet record and an overall 537-231 record. He was named the Division III Coach of the Year in 1982 and 1991, and the NCAA Division III Coach of the Decade for the 1980's. He also coached football, wrestling, and cross-country.

The Marigene Arnold Award honors the player who exemplifies all of the characteristics and qualities desired in a Hornet Football Player. She was the first woman to serve on the Kalamazoo Faculty Advisory Committee for Athletics and was a long-time member of the MIAA Women's Sports Committee.
