Catching Up With Our Competing Sports

Men's Cross Country
Coming off a 17th-place finish as a team at the MSU Spartan Invite that included DI, DII, DIII, and NAIA opponents on Sept. 16, the Hornets did not compete this past week. However, this week, they are back in action at the NCAA DIII Pre-Nationals meet on Oct. 1.

Women's Cross Country
The Hornets received a 17th-place finish at the MSU Spartan Invite on Sept. 16 and did not compete last week. However, the team will run at the NCAA DIII Pre-Nationals meet this week on Oct. 1.

Men's Golf
The Hornets competed in their final non-conference tournament before heading into MIAA play at the Aquinas Fall Invitational (Sept. 21). The team finished 11th out of 14 teams by shooting a 336, with Tyler Omness finishing as the top golfer with a 79, tying for 20th overall. The Hornets also got their MIAA season started on Monday (Sept. 26) in the first Jamboree. With a final score of 326, Kalamazoo finished fifth, Omness tied for 11th with a 77, and Alec Rosenbaum tied for 18th with a 79. The team will also compete in the second MIAA Jamboree this weekend on Saturday, Oct. 1, with Alma hosting.

Women's Golf
During a busy week, the Hornets competed in the second and third MIAA Jamborees on Sept. 21 and 24. The team finished ninth in both instances, with 384 and 383, respectively. The Hornets had an 11-stroke improvement from the first Jamboree to the second. Sydney Pickell shot 79 and tied for fifth on Sept. 21, while shooting an 82 for a tie in 22nd on Sept. 24 to lead the team. The women will finish the regular season for the fall on Thursday (Sept. 29) in the fourth MIAA Jamboree, with Olivet hosting. 

Football
The Hornets dropped their first game of the season to Alfred by a score of 31-23. Josh Nichols had 305 passing yards and two touchdowns to Lance Taylor and Andrew WidgerJonah Spates paced the team with 93 receiving yards, and Noah Piercy also had 65. Defensively, Carson Deines led the team with 10 tackles, while Adam Stapleton registered a sack and Ryan Hanifan had an interception. Ian Burr went three-for-three on field goals with a long of 37 yards and converted both extra point attempts. The football team will have its opening MIAA game at home on Saturday (Oct. 1).

Men's Soccer
In their only game of the week, the Hornets took down a tough Illinois Tech squad 2-1 on Sept. 21. After allowing a goal in the first half, two second-half goals by Jeremiah Heath and Aidan Gillig propelled the team to a win. Gillig also assisted on Heath's goal, which was his first career collegiate goal. Shun Yonehara also picked up an assist, while Alex Kish took home the win in net. The Hornets will have two non-conference games this week on Tuesday (Sept. 27) at Notre Dame and Sunday (Oct. 2) at Carthage. 

Women's Soccer
After winning three of their last four games, the Hornets did not play this past week. The team will begin MIAA play with a road game on Tuesday (Sept. 27) against Alma and then a home game against Albion on Saturday (Oct. 1). 

Men's Tennis
The Hornets went to St. Louis, Mo., to compete in the ITA Central Regional on Sept. 23-25. Highlighting the trip was Adnan Alousi, who went 5-1 in singles play and ended up winning the consolation bracket finals. Peter FitzgeraldTieran Rafferty, and Gabe Vidinas also traveled to compete. The team will continue its season in the spring, with matches beginning in March.

Volleyball
Two of the three matches went to five sets this past week as the Hornets defeated Saint Mary's 3-2 and then ended up losing to Defiance (3-2) and Hope (3-0). Halley Johnson led the team with 26 kills this past week, with Charlotte Ruiter also contributing 20. Between the two leading setters, Jana Molby had 48, while Sara Reathaford finished with 43. Gathering the most digs was the libero in Morgan Shearer at 42, with Lizzy Rachiele also collecting 35. At the net, Ruiter finished with 10 blocks, and Josee Cooke had six. The Hornets will have another two matches this week at home against Trine on Wednesday (Sept. 28) and then on the road against North Park on Friday (Sept. 30).
