Baseball Run Ends in Loss to Christopher Newport

MARIETTA, Ohio - The Kalamazoo College baseball team's season came to an end Sunday with an 11-5 loss to Christopher Newport University in the NCAA III Regionals at Marietta College. The game began Saturday night, but was suspended in the top of the fourth inning after two weather delays. Play resumed Sunday at 10:30 a.m. with Christopher Newport leading 3-0.

The Captains extended their lead Sunday with three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth, making it an 8-0 game. Kalamazoo got on the board with Spencer Baldwin's two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth. The Hornets then loaded the bases, but were unable to score again.

Christopher Newport added three in the top of the seventh to go up 11-2. Kalamazoo loaded the bases again in the bottom half with nobody out. Baldwin drew a walk to bring in a run. Lukas Bolton was hit-by-pitch which scored a run, and Noah Hecht walked to bring in the third run of the inning before the side was retired.

Kalamazoo had one runner reach in the eighth before loading the bases again in the ninth, but the Hornets were unable to score again, ending in the 11-5 final.

Christopher Newport had 12 hits in the game compared to nine by Kalamazoo.

Spencer Baldwin led the Hornets with three hits including a double and a home run with three RBIs.

Blake Bean had two hits including a double. Harrison Poeszat also had two hits.

Kalamazoo finished the season with a record of 27-13, the second-most wins in school history. The Hornets earned their first NCAA III Tournament victory in their second appearance.
