Football Wins Opener at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio - The Kalamazoo College football team won its season opener 24-17 at Oberlin College on Saturday. 

Kalamazoo led 10-0 after the first quarter and 17-3 at halftime. After taking a 24-3 lead in the third, Oberlin scored twice to make it 24-17. The Hornet defense made some big stops in the fourth to hold the lead and secure the win.

Oberlin put up 401 yards of total offense compared to 273 by Kalamazoo. The Hornet defense caused four turnovers (2 fumbles, 2 interceptions) while the Hornet offense did not have any turnovers.

Josh Nichols was 14-of-26 passing for 204 yards with one touchdown pass. He also rushed for 41 yards on eight attempts.

Jon Brunette rushed for 44 yards on 11 carries with one score. He also scored on a 36-yard reception and had 50 yards receiving.

Sheldon Riley also scored on a 1-yard run for the Hornets.

Pierce Burke had 49 yards receiving on two catches. DaShawn Meeks had a 38-yard reception while Bubba Wilson had 28 yards on two catches.

Ian Burr kicked a 39-yard field goal and made two extra points. Madison Barch finished off the scoring with an extra point.

Jack Miller led the defense with 12 tackles and two interceptions. Payton Fleming had 11 tackles and both fumble recoveries. Nick Lang had 10 tackles.

The Hornets are back in action next Saturday, Sept. 11 at Central College (Ia.) at 1 p.m. Central.
