Football Wins Season Opener Over Oberlin

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College football team won its season opener 21-14 over Oberlin College at Angell Field Saturday afternoon.

Kalamazoo got on the board midway through the first quarter on Jon Brunette's 1-yard touchdown run. Brunette scored again on a 1-yard run with 3:46 left in the first, giving Kalamazoo a 14-0 lead.

Oberlin scored with 21 seconds left in the second quarter making it a 14-7 lead going into halftime.

Kalamazoo went up 21-7 early in the third quarter when Bubba Wilson scored on a 41-yard touchdown pass from Josh Nichols

Oberlin made it 21-14 with 14:09 left in the fourth quarter, and the Hornet defense held the Yeomen off the board the rest of the way.

Oberlin had 321 yards of total offense compared to 292 by Kalamazoo. 

Josh Nichols was 17-of-31 passing for 174 yards with one touchdown. Zach Metz completed one pass for 31 yards.

Jon Brunette rushed for 40 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns. Sheldon Riley had eight carries for 22 yards.

Andrew Widger led the receivers with five catches for 70 yards. Sam Hughes had four catches for 38 yards. Brunette had four catches for 25 yards. Bubba Wilson's 41-yard catch resulted in a touchdown.

Carson Deines led the Hornet defense with 11 tackles including one for loss. Jake Robertson and Brenden Moat each had eight tackles. Moat had 1.5 for lost yardage. Micah Groom and Jack Miller each had five tackles. Bryce Balabuch had two tackles with a sack.

Kalamazoo returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 10 with a home game against Kenyon scheduled for 1 p.m.
