Kalamazoo College's Ian Burr has been selected as the MIAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday (Sept. 12). This is Burr's second consecutive week earning the honor.
Burr was active in the kicking, punting, field goal, and extra point responsibilities for the second consecutive week as the Hornets defeated Kenyon 24-21 this past Saturday at Angell Field. As a result, Kalamazoo football has started the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2018 season.
In the kicking game, Burr averaged 62.6 yards per kick for his kickoff duties, totaling 313 yards in five instances. Four of the five kickoffs resulted in a touchback for the Hornets, and the other time the Kenyon returner only made it 14 yards. Burr now has seven touchbacks in the first two games of the season while averaging 63.6 yards per kick.
Burr significantly impacted the punting game by flipping the field, averaging 37 yards per punt. Two of the three punts for a total of 111 yards ended up inside the 20, at five and 15-yard lines. In eight punts in 2022, Burr is averaging 35.9 yards per punt, with five ending up inside the 20.
As for field goals and extra points, Burr made his first field goal of the season in a 26-yard try. His field goal was the game's difference, and he also capped off three Kalamazoo touchdowns with three extra points. Burr now has nine points on the season with a field goal and six extra points.
Kalamazoo will travel to Defiance for its first road game of the 2022 season. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Defiance, Ohio.
