ANGOLA, Ind. – The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team got off to a strong start Saturday afternoon, but was unable to keep pace with the host Trine University Thunder in the second half of a 60-45 defeat.

The Hornets started the game with a Lukas Broadsword layup, which was followed by a pair of Ty Horky three-pointers that gave K an 8-0 advantage with 16:33 remaining in the half. A Gabriel Sharp three with 11:58 left provided the Hornets their largest lead of the game at 16-7 with just under twelve minutes to go before the break.

Trine managed to stay within hailing distance and used a three-point basket in the closing seconds of the first half to tie the game at 29. The Thunder then opened the second half by going on 10-0 run in the first 6:26 to open up a double-digit lead.

A DJ Courtney three-pointer with 13:16 remaining in the game ended the run and brought Kalamazoo back to within seven points, but that would be as close as the Hornets would get the rest of the way.  Trine's posted its largest lead of 18 points with 1:32 remaining.

Broadsword led Kalamazoo (4-11, 1-3 MIAA) with 11 points and six rebounds. Horky chipped in 10 points and was one of a trio of Hornets to dish three assists. Courtney added seven points, two assists, two blocks and a steal.

Trine's shooting and rebounding pushed them over the top, as they held advantages over K in overall field-goal percentage (43-33%), three-point field-goal percentage (44-23%), and rebounding (41-28). Kalamazoo had the edge in steals (15-11) and blocks (3-1).

The Hornets will next return to the court for a home game on Wednesday. Calvin College will head to Anderson Athletic Center for an 8 p.m. scheduled tip-off.
