ANDERSON, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team played its second straight road game to open the season on Saturday night (Nov. 12). After the Hornets led by two at halftime, the Ravens won the second half by 12 to take the game 81-71. Kalamazoo has opened the 2022-23 campaign by splitting their first two match-ups.

The teams battled in the first half as the lead changed hands six times and was also tied up six times. Lukas Broadsword was the primary catalyst in the first half, totaling 14 points on 7-10 shooting. The largest lead the Hornets had was five in the first half, while the Ravens built up their lead to six at one point. Kalamazoo's 54.8% shooting and 50% from three-point land led to a 41-39 lead at the half. Broadsword made a lay-up with seven seconds left in the half to give the Hornets the advantage.

The Anderson defense stepped up in the second half, holding Kalamazoo to 32.1% from the field. Josh Decker was the leading scorer in the half with nine points, as all three field goals came from downtown. Despite the shooting troubles, the Hornets had the lead until the 12:49 mark. From there, the Ravens went on a 14-3 run to grab a nine-point advantage with seven minutes remaining. Even though the Anderson lead grew to as much as 13, Kalamazoo went on a run to dwindle the deficit down to two with 2:46 left on the clock. However, the Ravens made their free throws down the stretch to ultimately win by 10 points.

Broadsword finished the game with a team-high with 18 points and seven rebounds. All four of Decker's field goals came from behind the arc as he finished with 12 points and five rebounds.

Ty Horky finished with 11 points and seven rebounds while tying for the team lead at three assists. Carter Bandemer was the fourth Hornet in double figures, scoring 10 points off the bench. Rounding out the scoring for the Hornets were Bobby Samples (9), Nicholas Olmeda (5), JJ Stevens (4), and Addison Atwater (2).

Kalamazoo had a 44.1% shooting percentage compared to Anderson's 56.1%. The Hornets also hit half (12-24) of their three-point attempts and went 7-15 from the free-throw line. The Ravens also finished with more rebounds (36-31), assists (17-15), points off turnovers (12-11), points in the paint (48-20), fastbreak points (9-0), and bench points (26-16).

Kalamazoo will play its home opener next Saturday (Nov. 19) against Oberlin, beginning at 3 p.m. in the Anderson Athletic Center.
