GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College men's lacrosse team fell 12-6 to Calvin in its season opener on Saturday evening.

After a scoreless first quarter for the Hornets, Kalamazoo bounced back in the second with a goal by Brandon Wright. The Hornets scored again off a shot from Jake Nugent, but the Knights were able to end the quarter with back-to-back goals, narrowly outscoring Kalamazoo 3-2 in the second frame.

Calvin extended their lead early in the third quarter with three straight goals before the Hornets were able to break out with another goal from Nugent and eventual back-to-back points from Jack Smith and Jack Jesko. The Knights' offense stayed hot, scoring two more goals in the third and another two in the final quarter. Kalamazoo had the last goal, this time from Jack Loveland, to make it a 12-6 final.

Jake Nugent led Kalamazoo with two goals and two assists, also collecting six ground balls.

Jack Loveland, Jack Smith, Brandon Wright and Jack Jesko each added goals for the Hornets.

The Hornets return home on Friday, March 12 for a game against Trine at 7 p.m.
