Oliver Tye of the Kalamazoo College men's swimming & diving team was named the SAAC Men's Hornet of the Week on Wednesday (Jan. 18).
The men's swimming & diving team competed for the first time in over a month when they hosted Hope, Lake Forest, and Wheaton in the Michigan-Illinois Quad on Jan. 14. Hope scored the most points at 639 points, followed by Lake Forest (515 points), Kalamazoo (450 points), and Wheaton (322 points). The Hornets had 19 top-eight finishes in the 13 events.
Tye had a big day for Kalamazoo, earning three top-two finishes and being the top point-getter. In his individual races, he was the winner of the 50 Free with a time of 22.41 and followed that up with a second-place finish in the 100 Free at 48.74. His 50 Free time is less than a second off his season best at 21.97 and the same with his 100 Free time at 47.92. Tye was also a part of the 400 Free Relay team that finished second at 3:16.3.
As a senior, Tye has established personal best times in both the 50 Free and 100 Free this season. In addition, he is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member while majoring in mathematics at Kalamazoo.
Kalamazoo will next compete in the Hope Tr-Meet that will include Olivet on Friday (Jan. 20), beginning at 6 p.m.
