Sam Ankley of the Kalamazoo College men's swimming & diving team was named the SAAC Men's Hornet of the Week on Tuesday (Jan. 24).
The men's swimming & diving team competed in an MIAA tri-meet as Hope hosted Kalamazoo and Olivet on Jan. 20. The Hornets split the duals on the day, defeating Olivet 178-48 and falling to Hope 155-87. The Hornets had 19 top-eight finishes in the 13 events.
Ankley swept the podium at the tri-meet, finishing first in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. Both events were six-dive events, with Ankley setting career bests on the day. He ended up with a score of 300.05 in the 1-meter, which is the highest score in the MIAA for the past three seasons. Ankley scored 284.4 in the 3-meter event to total 584.45 points for the weekend.
Even after taking last season off, Ankley has an incredible resume as a Hornet. He was an All-MIAA performer in his first season after collecting five MIAA Diver of the Week honors and finishing third in the 3-meter at the MIAA Championships. Then, Ankley turned it up the following season as he finished second in the 1-meter and 3-meter events at the MIAA Championships, made the All-MIAA team, was the MIAA Co-Most Valuable Diver, and was a CSCAA All-American in the 1-meter and 3-meter.
Kalamazoo will next compete in a dual at Alma on Saturday (Jan. 28) to wrap up the regular season.
