Softball Falls to Trine, Calvin

ANGOLA, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College softball team played twice today at Trine University, against the Thunder as well as a game with Calvin. The Hornets dropped their first game 10-1 and lost a close battle in the second game 9-6 to the Knights. 

Game One

 

Trine won the day's opener 10-1. Kalamazoo earned the first run of the contest. With two runners on base, Nina Szalkiewicz hit a sacrifice bunt to send home Kelsey Diekman on third. The host Thunder went on to score twice in the second inning and added eight runs in the fourth to earn the win.

The Thunder outhit Kalamazoo 9-1. The lone hit for the Hornets came from a double by Lucy Hart

Game Two

Kalamazoo struck first again in the second game with an RBI single by Sam Moss to score Lucy Hart, on base from a single out to center field. Calvin scored six runs over the next two innings to take the lead. The Hornets were able to rally with five runs in the third to tie the game 6-6. Sammi Luzadre hit a home run to score two runners, Nikki Gorder singled to left field to send in one runner, and Hart had her third hit of the day, a single up the middle for 2 RBIs. 

Despite the rally, Calvin scored three more runs over the next three innings as the Hornets went scoreless, making the final score 9-6 in the Knights' favor. 

Calvin had nine hits to Kalamazoo's six. 

Lucy Hart, Sammi Luzadre, Keelin McManus and Brynna Garden each had two hits. Hart and Luzadre had two RBI each. 

Luzadre hit her first home run of the season. McManus hit two doubles and Garden had one. 

Up Next

Kalamazoo hosts two teams this Saturday, April 17. The Hornets play Albion at 12 p.m. and Hope at 4 p.m. The two visiting teams are scheduled to play each other at 2 p.m.
