Bogard, Heeren Earn All-MIAA Honors

Midfielders Rose Bogard and Hannah Heeren, whose efforts helped the Kalamazoo College women's lacrosse team to a program-record eight wins in 2022, were both honored with All-MIAA honors Wednesday afternoon.

"Rose and Hannah both had fantastic seasons and finished among the top players in the MIAA in almost every statistical category," said Head Coach Jess Smith. "Their work on both ends of the field provided consistency and leadership for a very young team, and they both set a fantastic example in terms of their tenacity and effort in practice and games."

Bogard, a senior economics major from Ann Arbor (Community H.S.), was named to the first-team as a midfielder. This is Bogard's second time as an all-conference selection, as she was named to the second-team in 2021 and also marks the second-consecutive year that she received MIAA Offensive Player of the Week honors (3/28/22 & 3/8/21).

Bogard led the conference in goals (82) and ground balls (100), her team in points (94) and caused turnovers (51) and was second on the team in assists (12). Her goal and point totals are single-season team records, and her 11 points scored on March 27 is the team single-game record. Her career totals of 144 goals, 41 assists, and 185 points are all good for second-place in the Kalamazoo College record books.

"Rose had a great senior year, stepping up as a leader on the field and breaking Kalamazoo's single season goals and points records," said Head Coach Jess Smith. "Her defensive and possession efforts were every bit as impressive as her play on the offensive end, which resulted in her leading the conference by a large margin in both caused turnovers and ground balls. No one plays as hard as Rose, and her teammates are all better for having played with her!"

Although Bogard's brilliant college career is ending, the Hornets may not have to look far for their next record-breaker. Heeren, coming off a 2021 season that saw her honored as the MIAA Rookie of the Year, tied with Bogard for the team lead in draw controls (98), and her 74 goals placed second on the team and third in the conference.

Heeren's 70 ground balls placed her second in the conference and her totals in points (83) and caused turnovers (32) were second on the team. In addition to her All-MIAA Second-Team selection, the biology & Spanish major from Belmont (Rockford H.S.), was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week on March 7.

The end of Heeren's sophomore season shows her steadily marching up the Hornet leader lists: her 111 career goals already places her third in Kalamazoo history, while her 127 career points puts her in fourth place all-time.

"In just her sophomore year, Hannah had a breakout season, finishing in the top three in the MIAA in full year stats in goals, draw controls, ground balls, and caused turnovers," Smith said. "Hannah showed composure beyond her years in taking on the weight of being a primary scorer, key ball handler in transition, and top defender. Her improvement on the field and mental toughness to take on a key role for our team were very impressive, and she will be a great leader on the team and in our midfield in her junior and senior seasons."
