Ella Spooner of the Kalamazoo College women's lacrosse team was selected as the MIAA Women's Defensive Player of the Week on Monday (Feb. 20). Spooner just played her first game as a Hornet this past weekend and picked up her first player of the week honor.

The women's lacrosse team traveled to Muskingum to open its 2023 season. After falling behind at the end of the first quarter, the Hornet offense erupted and ended up with an 18-9 win over the Fighting Muskies.

Spooner comes to Kalamazoo from Holland, Mich., and scored six goals while tallying an assist in the win. She had an unassisted and free position goal in the first quarter, a goal with a man advantage in the second, then two goals in the third, and another in the fourth to close the game. Her assist came on Sydney Myszenski's goal in the third period. Spooner continued to stuff the stat sheet as she ended the game with four draw controls, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers.

Kalamazoo will next travel to Ohio Northern on Saturday (Feb. 25), with the game beginning at 1 p.m.
