Kalamazoo, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's soccer team defeated Trine 4-0 on Monday night in the first round of the MIAA tournament.

Kalamazoo first got on the board in the 24th minute with a goal from Kai Ketola, assisted by Lauren McColley in a cluster of Hornets near the Trine goal. Trine was unable to score in the first half and the Hornets were held to one goal to take the 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Hornets exploded in the second half for three more goals. A goalie change by Trine to open the half proved to be fatal for the Thunder. On Kalamazoo's first possession and 30 seconds into the half, Joy Hunziker came up with a goal during another cluster near the Thunder's net, helped by Ketola who had just made a shot attempt of her own. In the 50th minute Ketola again scored for Kalamazoo, this time assisted again by McColley.

In the 64th minute, Anna Murphy attempted a goal that ended up blocked, but was able to set up another kick to Hunziker just feet from the goal to earn her her second goal of the game and Kalamazoo's third in less than 20 minutes. The Hornets wrapped up the half with three goals scored on 18 attempts.

"Really proud of the group to bring the energy and focus after a couple tough results last week," Head Coach Bryan Goyings said. "Kai was all over the field tonight. She put herself and her teammates in some outstanding spots. Joy's two goals reflected the determination the team had to get a positive result tonight."

The Hornets outshot the Thunder with 27 attempts to Trine's seven.

Kai Ketola and Joy Hunziker each scored two goals. Hunziker scored on both her shot attempts, while Ketola recorded a season-high seven attempts.

Hannah Wolfe was perfect in goal for the Hornets, recording her fifth shutout of the season. She had two saves in 80 minutes of play. Alexis Nesbitt made her second appearance of the season for the last ten minutes.

The Hornets will head to the second round of the tournament on Wednesday, April 21 at home against Hope, who won tonight in their team's first-round game against Alma. The starting time for the game is to be announced.

"We are grateful for the opportunity to keep playing and look forward to facing an excellent opponent on Wedesday night," Goyings said.
