Tenniswood Reflects on Kalamazoo College Experience

Emily Tenniswood swimming alongside a quote from the story.

Emily Tenniswood recently graduated from Kalamazoo College with degrees in economics and anthropology/sociology.

Tenniswood, a four-year member of the women's swimming and diving team, is now training to be a behavior technician to do therapy with children with autism at Total Spectrum in Ann Arbor. She begins pursuing a master's degree in social work at the University of Michigan later this month.

"As a student-athlete on the swim team, I had so much fun and built relationships with so many great people," said Tenniswood, who swam the freestyle, breaststroke and IM events for the Hornets. "Balancing schoolwork with athletics was demanding, but I learned so much from it and feel ready to take on many more challenges going forward."

The William G. Howard Memorial Prize in Social Sciences and the C. Wallace Lawrence Prize in Economics were just two academic honors that Tenniswood earned as a K student. She also made the MIAA Academic Honor roll in 2019, 2020 and 2022, and as a freshman was a member of Alpha Lambada Delta, an organization that recognizes academic excellence from first-year college students.

Her Senior Integrated Project was called "American Maternity Leave Policies from an Economic and Sociological Perspective." It combined her majors with her concentration in Public Policy/Urban Affairs.

"Coming to K was definitely the right decision for me," said Tenniswood, who prepped at Troy H.S. (Troy, Mich.). "The people, the small classes, and the unique experiences all made college an amazing four years.

"I am going to miss it a ton, but I am excited for all the great things coming up!"
