Women's Tennis Honors 2021 Seniors

The three seniors on the 2021 Kalamazoo College women's tennis team were honored prior to a home match on Sunday, April 25. Following is what was read during the ceremony:


Good afternoon and welcome to Stowe Stadium and Kalamazoo College for today's women's tennis match between Olivet College and Kalamazoo College. Today is Senior Day and we would like to honor our three outstanding senior Hornets! 

The Class of 2021 has been a part of four years of ITA and MIAA All-Academic teams. They currently hold a 32-23 overall team record and an 18-4 team record in MIAA play. They have competed in over 230 singles and doubles matches in their careers. 

Julia Bachmann

Julia is a Psychology major and Anthropology minor from Grand Haven, Michigan. 

As a senior captain, Julia is an accomplished all-court player and always gives everything she has for the team. Her personality and great spirit have proven to be vital to the success of the Women's Tennis Program. 

Julia studied abroad in Aberdeen Scotland. The title of Julia's SIP was "Early Environmental Adversity: The Relationship Between Food Insecurity, Maternal Depression and Infant Social-Emotional Development". 

After graduation, Julia will pursue a graduate degree in psychology from Michigan State University. Congratulations to Julia on a great tennis career at Kalamazoo College.

Helen Pelak

Helen is a Biology and Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies major and Psychology minor from McLean, Virginia. 

As a senior captain, four-year starter, and All-MIAA selection, Helen is a compassionate leader and intense competitor. She has been a consistent force in the middle of the Hornet singles and doubles lineup for all four years. 

Helen studied abroad in Budapest, Hungary.  

The title of Helen's SIP was "US Rate of Cesarean Surgery: Medicalization of childbirth as a discursive formation through the frameworks of intersectionality and reproductive justice".

After graduation, Helen will be in Sydney, Australia on a Fulbright scholarship researching with a Midwifery scholar. Helen plans on attending medical school after her Fulbright. Congratulations to Helen on a fantastic tennis career at Kalamazoo College.

Maddy Winarski

Maddy is a Biology major and Psychology minor with a concentration in community and global health from Rochester Hills, Michigan. 

As a senior captain, four-year starter, and two-time All-MIAA selection, Maddy is a tenacious competitor on and off the court. Her tenacity and willingness to do the work have helped her finish in the top 20 in singles wins in Kalamazoo College women's tennis history.

The title of Maddy's SIP was "Comparison of Intraosseous and Peripheral Intravenous vascular device placement in relation to the time of first advanced cardiac life support medication administration"

After graduation, Maddy will be doing research at the Detroit Medical Center and will be attending medical school in the fall of 2022.

Congratulations to Maddy on a fantastic tennis career at Kalamazoo College.
