Catching Up With Our Competing Sports

Baseball
Kalamazoo continued MIAA play with two mid-week games against Hope on Apr. 8 and 10 before playing a three-game series against Adrian on Apr. 13-14. The Hornets split the two games with the Flying Dutchmen with a 15-3 win and 8-5 defeat, and then won two out of three games against the Bulldogs with 10-4 and 9-7 wins following a 12-2 loss. Harrison Poeszat and David Stechow hit .450 (9-20) on the week, with Poeszat hitting two doubles, two home runs, 10 RBI, and scoring eight runs. Alex Fenkell hit .357 with a double and three RBI, and Ryar Rinehart hit .333 with a double, a home run, and four RBI. Robert Ahlgren made two appearances (one start) and had a 0.96 ERA in 9.1 innings with four strikeouts. Owen Schihl made three appearances and had a 1.80 ERA in five innings. The Hornets will continue conference play with a home mid-week game against Hope on Tuesday (Apr. 16) before playing Trine in a three-game series with a road game on Saturday (Apr. 20) and a home doubleheader on Sunday (Apr. 21).

Men's Golf
The Hornets began the spring season on Apr. 15 by hosting the Steven Tyler Memorial and finishing fifth with a team score of 329. Tyler Omness finished in a tie for third with a 77, and Emiliano Alvarado Rescala finished in a tie for 10th with an 81. Nick Coseo (85), Aidan Lancaster (86), MacKale McGuire (93), and Alex Rueff (94) also participated. Kalamazoo will continue its spring season at the Defiance College Invite on Friday and Saturday (Apr. 19-20) at the Moose Landing Country Club. 

Women's Golf
Kalamazoo continued the spring season on Apr. 15 by hosting the Steven Tyler Memorial and finishing third with a team score of 352. Sydney Pickell finished in a tie for 10th with an 87, and then Savera Rajendra-Nicolucci and Marissa Kovac finished in a tie for 12th with an 88. Jillian Smith (89) and Gretchen Wilson (109) also participated. The Hornets will continue their spring season with a make-up MIAA Jamboree from the fall at Trine on Thursday (Apr. 18) at the Zollner Golf Course.

Men's Lacrosse
The Hornets continued their MIAA season with a home game against Albion on Apr. 9 and a road game at Calvin on Apr. 13. Kalamazoo was defeated by the Britons 13-5 and the Knights 14-7. Eli Routt scored four goals on the week, and then Cam VanGalder and Logan Gillis scored twice. Colby Skinner collected 11 ground balls and five caused turnovers, while Jack Bungart picked up nine ground balls and caused seven turnovers. Sam Hughes was 20-43 in the faceoff circle with nine ground balls. Dylan Wickey made 26 saves in the cage and picked up 17 ground balls. Kalamazoo will continue conference play with a home game against Adrian on Wednesday (Apr. 17) and a road game at Hope on Saturday (Apr. 20). 


Women's Lacrosse
Kalamazoo continued MIAA play with a road game at Calvin on Apr. 10 and a home game against Hope on Apr. 13. The Hornets gained their seventh consecutive win after defeating the Knights 16-15 in overtime before falling to the Flying Dutch 17-6. Hannah Heeren had seven goals, an assist, 20 draw controls, three ground balls, and four caused turnovers on the week. Ella Spooner also scored seven goals, while Tessa Fuller collected two goals and four assists. Julia Kozal finished with five ground balls as Annslee Ware added three ground balls and four caused turnovers. Jordan Flink finished with 20 saves in the cage and four ground balls. The Hornets continue conference play with a home game against Albion on Tuesday (Apr. 16) and a road game at Saint Mary's on Saturday (Apr. 20).


Softball
The Hornets continued their season with three doubleheaders against Calvin on Apr. 9, Saint Mary's on Apr. 13, and North Park on Apr. 14. Kalamazoo went 3-3 on the week with a split against the Knight (11-3 loss and 1-0 win), two losses to the Belles (2-0 and 5-4), and a sweep over the Vikings (3-0 and 4-3). Emma Newlove hit .444 with eight hits, two doubles, a home run, six RBI, eight runs scored, and two walks. Jordan Wesaw hit .368 with seven hits, and Landrie Fridsma hit .316 with six hits. Jordan Cook made three starts, going 2-0 with two complete games and a shutout. In 18.2 innings, she allowed seven runs (four earned) on 20 hits and six walks with eight strikeouts and a 1.50 ERA. Kalamazoo will continue its season with four home doubleheaders against Olivet on Wednesday (Apr. 17), Aquinas on Thursday (Apr. 18), Hope on Saturday (Apr. 20), and Anderson on Sunday (Apr. 21).

Men's Tennis
Kalamazoo continued conference play with a single home match against Albion on Apr. 6. The Hornets defeated the Britons 9-0 to move to 3-1 in the MIAAGabe Vidinas/Alex Fleming (8-1), Adnan Alousi/Julian Bilbao (8-4), and Tieran Rafferty/Seth Keana (8-3) gained doubles wins. Vidinas (6-0, 6-0), Alousi (6-0, 6-0), Fleming (6-4, 6-0), Bilbao (6-3, 6-4), Lucas Preston (6-4, 6-1), and Keana (6-1, 6-1) gained singles wins. The Hornets will continue their season with three road matches at Olivet on Tuesday (Apr. 16), Case Western Reserve on Friday (Apr. 19), and Hope on Saturday (Apr. 20).

Women's Tennis
The Hornets continued MIAA play with two road matches at Saint Mary's on Apr. 13 and Olivet on Apr. 14. Kalamazoo fell to the Belles 7-2 before rebounding to beat the Comets 9-0. Juliana Pullen (6-3, 6-3) and Molly Stevison (6-2, 7-5) earned singles wins against SMC. Pullen/Maddie Hurley (8-2), Ivy Walker/Olivia Wolfe (8-1), and Rebecca Elias/Soussana Kimbouris (8-0) gained doubles wins over UO. Pullen (6-0, 6-0), Hurley (6-2, 6-1), Eleni Bougioukou (6-2, 6-0), Stevison (6-0, 6-0), Wolfe (6-1, 6-7, 10-6), and Kimbouris (6-0, 6-0) gained singles wins. Kalamazoo will continue MIAA play with a single road match at Hope on Saturday (Apr. 20).
