Baseball loses conference opener at Albion

The Kalamazoo College baseball team lost its conference opener, 6-2, at Albion College on Saturday. The Hornets lost the second game, 14-0.

After a scoreless first two innings in the opener, Albion scored four runs in the third and two in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead.

The Hornets scored a pair in the seventh as Scott Devine drove in Anthony Shaheen with a single to right and Brett Thomas drove in pinch-runner Bobby Hilliard with a single to right.

Kalamazoo had five hits in the game compared to nine for Albion.

Scott Devine was 3-for-3 in the game.

Kalamazoo gave up eight runs in the first inning of the first game and was unable to dig out of the early deficit. Albion had 12 hits in the game compared to five for Kalamazoo. The Britons also took advantage of 11 walks and two hit batters. Kalamazoo left eight runners on base, including two at third.

Marc Zughaib, Adam McDowell, Brett Thomas, and K.J. Schultz each had a single. Scott Devine had a double.

Kalamazoo and Albion are scheduled to complete the series with a doubleheader on Sunday. Those games are also scheduled to be played in Albion due to field conditions in Kalamazoo.
