Baseball completes sweep of Olivet

Joey Aliotta playing baseball.

Kalamazoo, MI - The Kalamazoo College baseball team won both games of a doubleheader today against Olivet 8-2, and 3-1. The two wins completed the weekend sweep for the Hornets and were their fifth and sixth wins in a row. The team is now 19-11 overall and 14-6 in MIAA play.

In game one Olivet got on the board first with one run in the top of the fourth. Kalamazoo responded in the bottom of the fourth and fifth with two runs in each inning.

Kalamazoo then exploded for four runs in the bottom of the sixth including a bases-clearing triple by Mitchell VanKoevering. Carter Chandler, Joey Aliotta, and Ben Blomme also each had an RBI in the game.

Nick Janssen was sharp from the mound again, winning his fourth game of the year and moving to 4-1. Janssen threw 5.2 innings and gave up zero earned runs. Brandon DeFore also threw an inning of no-hit ball in relief to end the game.

In the second game Kalamazoo did all of its offensive damage in the first inning. Aliotta doubled and drove in three runs in the Hornets half of the frame.

After that it was up to Adam McDowell to hold onto Kalamazoo's lead. He pitched a great game and earned the win by throwing 4.1 innings of scoreless ball. After the Hornets struggled for a little bit in the top of the sixth and allowed the Comets to load the bases, Zach Popovich came in and recorded the final two outs and collected his fourth save of the year.

The Hornets next game is a non-conference tilt with Ohio Northern at home on Thursday, Apr. 23.
