Baseball starts spring trip with a win

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Kalamazoo College baseball team got its spring trip to Florida started on a high note Thursday afternoon as the Hornets defeated Knox College 13-3 forcing a seven inning mercy.

Kalamazoo jumped out to a lead right away as Ian Kobernick drove in Ryan Orr on a sacrifice fly. The Hornets added two more runs in the first inning on a wild pitch and an RBI single from Connor Grant.

After adding six more runs in the bottom of the third, Knox got itself on the board in the top of the fourth, but the Hornets had an answer.

Andre Gard, Jordan Wiley and David Kracht all picked up RBI singles in the bottom of the fourth as K increased its lead to 13-2.

Knox added a run in the top of the sixth but that's as close as it would get to mounting any kind of comeback.

Dylan Pierce picked up the win on the afternoon putting in six strong innings of work and earning a quality start. He gave up three runs on six hits and struck out two.

Offensively, Grant had a huge day going 2-for-4 and driving in four runs. Orr and Wiley each recorded two hits and Wiley drove in two runs.

Six other players record hits for the Hornets.

Kalamazoo is back in action tomorrow when they square off with Suffolk.
