KALAMAZOO, Mich. – In the final two games of the four game series with Alma College, the Kalamazoo College baseball team walked away from Woodworth Field Sunday evening with a split on the day and for the series as a whole.
Alma took game one Sunday afternoon, 12-5, and the Hornets grabbed game two, 6-2.
Game One
With the Hornets struggling to find their rhythm at the plate early in game one and Alma doing the opposite, Kalamazoo found itself in a 7-0 hole after two innings and never recovered.
Joe Giacolone threw three and two thirds innings of relief and managed to slow down the Scots' offense that jumped out to a quick lead. He recorded three strike outs.
Ian Kobernick and Josh Reuter each ended game one with two hits apiece for the Hornets. They each added an RBI for K.
Game Two
Falling behind 2-0 in game two, the Hornets looked as if they were in trouble as Alma's Phil Jock struck out six batters in the first three innings, but K's offense didn't sputter for long.
In the bottom of the fourth Connor Grant doubled to deep center field driving in Mitchell VanKoevering and Ian Kobernick to tie the game up.
After a scoreless fifth, the Hornets made a definitive breakthrough in the bottom of the sixth when they scored three runs on three hits sparked by a leadoff double from Jack Clark.
Nick Janssen maneuvered his way through six innings to earn the win for Kalamazoo before handing the game over to the Hornets' bullpen. Ryan Orr picked up the save after throw game one of yesterday's game.
Grant led the way offensively going 3-for-4 and driving in three runs. Kobernick went 2-for-4 and scored two runs from the leadoff spot.
With the day's results, Kalamazoo sits 15-9 in the MIAA, good for third. The Hornets will close out the regular season this Friday and Saturday with a four game series against Calvin.
Games one and two will be played at Woodworth Field on Friday. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
