Baseball sweeps at Calvin to break school record for wins

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College baseball team closed out the regular season with a pair of wins at Calvin on Saturday, winning 4-3 in the opener and 16-11 in 10 innings in the second game. Kalamazoo increased its win total to 21 on the season which sets a new school record for the Hornets. Kalamazoo's 17 wins in conference is also a school record.

Unofficially, Kalamazoo will be the No. 4 seed in the upcoming MIAA Tournament and will travel to top-seeded Adrian on Wednesday.

Game One

Kalamazoo scored a run in the second inning and three in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Calvin scored three runs in the fifth but was held in check the rest of the way.

Jack Clark was 2-for-3 while Mitchell VanKoevering had a double. Jordan Wiley singled and stole two bases while Connor Grant singled and drove in a pair of runs.

Game Two

Kalamazoo scored two runs in the top of the third only to see Calvin put up six in the bottom of the inning. Kalamazoo responded with three runs in the top of the fourth to make it a 6-5 game, but Calvin scored again with a run in the bottom of the fourth and another in the fifth to go up 8-5.

Kalamazoo scored a run in the sixth before scoring three in the top of the eighth to take a 9-8 lead. Calvin responded again with three in the bottom of the eighth to go up 11-9, but this time it was the Hornets who would respond with two runs in the ninth to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

Kalamazoo scored five runs in the 10th highlighted by 2-run singles by Jack Clark and Mitchell VanKoevering. Calvin was held scoreless in the bottom of the 10th securing the win for the Hornets.

Jack Clark went 4-for-6 with four RBIs and four assists in the field.

Ian Kobernick, Mitchell VanKoevering and Jack Dynes each had two hits. VanKoevering drove in four runs while Kobernick drove in three.

Jordan Wiley stole three bases in the game and set a new school record for stolen bases in a season (24).
