LOUISVILLE, Ky. – On opening day of the 2017 baseball season, the defending MIAA tournament champion Kalamazoo College baseball team came away with a 5-2 win over Anderson University at Derby City Field in Louisville, Ky.

The Hornets didn't waste any time scoring their first run of the season as Jordan Wiley was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first and was quickly driven in off the bat of Ian Kobernick on a double to right center.

K rallied to score three more in the bottom of the third once again jumpstarted by Wiley. Leading off the inning with a bunt single, Wiley managed to steal second, third and home giving K the 2-0 advantage. Brett Garwood and David Kracht each drove in runs later in the inning extending the lead to 4-0.

Anderson broke up starting pitcher Ryan Orr's shutout in the top of the fifth scoring two runs, one earned, but Orr limited Anderson's damage to just the two runs. He finished his day tossing seven innings of work, surrendering six hits and striking out 10 while earning the win.

Steve Simmons and Scott Zychowski closed the door in the final two innings not allowing a hit.

Offensively, Wiley reached base three times and went 2-for-3 from the dish. Kracht also recorded two hits going 2-for-4.

The Hornets conclude opening weekend tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m. when they take on Central before taking on Spalding at 2 p.m.
